The Truth About Living with IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease

The good news about IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease is that it is almost never fatal. But the downside of this is, the painful side effects and complications associated with these chronic illnesses can be severe. IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease is a disease of bouts of suffering broken up by periods of remission. These periods of remission can last for a long time and can become a permanent cure, if managed correctly. Quality of life for sufferers can be improved dramatically by using a number of practical techniques to manage and control the symptoms.

The minute a doctor tells you that you have IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease is the time to begin learning all that you can about these diseases. Start by asking him or her for very specific information about support resources for the illness. Be very proactive by jumping on the internet to locate support groups, books and papers written about management, control as well as the diet you must adopt to gain control. Identify a website where you can go for the latest and newest information on the field of research.

Many modern researchers, not necessarily medical doctors, have come to the conclusion that diet and lifestyle changes will control, and in fact cure or heal IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. At the very least choosing your food carefully will go a long way in improving your quality of life. Doctors and researchers stress the need to eliminate so called trigger foods from your daily meals. Trigger foods are those foods that bring on attacks, such as dairy products, spicy foods, or foods high in fiber or fat. If you get pain or other problems such as diarrhea after eating a certain food, then immediately take that food out of your diet. You don’t have to eliminate them permanently, just eat smaller quantities and don’t eat them as often as before.

A number of researchers and food experts have begun to recommend that IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease sufferers move to a raw food diet of organic produce. This involves juicing fruits and vegetables in order to ease digestion. This is important to allow healing of the wounded and damaged digestive tract, especially in the very beginning of change toward a healthier lifestyle. One must also guard against malnutrition in the beginning because Crohn’s is the type of illness that conditions the body to absorb the wrong amounts of nutrients. A loss of appetite also contributes to this problem. Consult your doctor and have him or her refer you to a dietitian who can create a diet that will sustain you complete with foods, supplements and vitamins.

Healing Crohn’s, Colitis and IBS Disease the Natural Way

Crohn’s disease is chronic, meaning that it never goes away or is cured. It is an inflammatory ailment that affects the entire gastrointestinal tract causing serious health complications. This illness dramatically affects quality of life for sufferers. It is not, however life threatening. Those with Crohn’s can expect to life a full lifetime with recurrent remissions. Men with the disease have a normal life expectancy of about 78 years while women may live a while longer on average. Morbidity attributed to Crohn’s is usually caused by untreated side effects and complication.

Symptoms vary from patient to patient and consequently there is no specific treatment. All treatment is crafted to fit the individual. Some common symptoms do include, anorexia, stomach pain, diarrhea, fever gas, bloating and dramatic weight loss. Sometimes there is blood and pus in the stool resulting from the damage done to the mucus lining of the bowels and intestines. Crohn’s is often complicated by malnutrition or the body’s inability to absorb the nutrients it needs to repair itself. In addition the immune system is compromised by the on going damage. Undigested food can accumulate and cause dangerous blockages in the intestines. Lesions and tears in the linings can sometimes cause spillage and damage to surrounding organs and force the need for surgical repairs.
No one has yet been able to pinpoint the exact cause of Crohn’s but there are a number of factors that contribute to its presence. These include poor diet and nutrition, food allergies, a compromised immune system as well as other environmental factors. Stress and anxiety are contribute to the discomfort felt by most sufferers.
Some researchers speculate that ridding the diet of processed foods, refined carbohydrates and fats along with the chemical additives and pesticides that go into food these days will go a long way in affecting a cure for Crohn’s. These same researchers blame the American way of eating as the main culprit behind all chronic illness existing in the world.
Other researchers and scientists are taking a closer look at the link between food allergies and symptoms of Crohn’s. All doctors routinely test for food sensitivities and allergies in connection to eliminate them as the cause of the problems. Common allergy foods are milk and dairy products, wheat, gluten, corn and chocolate to name just a few.
Many researchers feel that by restoring the natural biochemical balance in the body is the way to naturally cure Crohn’s. Naturally healing Crohn’s begins with removing all food triggers and harmful processed products as well as the pesticides and chemicals with which they are grown. Doing this while adding a natural and diet will see a return of strength and energy enabling you to add an exercise regimen to go another step toward better health without drugs and medications.

When Your Child Contracts Crohn’s Disease

Approximately 30% of those who suffer from Crohn’s Disease are diagnosed before the age of 20. The illness is a chronic condition, meaning there is no known cure. A child with unexplained weight loss, fatigue, joint pain, and stunted growth should be immediately evaluated by a doctor for signs of the disease. Experts estimate that more than 100,000 teenagers suffer from the debilitating disease in America.

Sometimes more serious symptoms appear requiring immediate attention. These symptoms include rectal bleeding, severe stomach pain, frequent diarrhea, and accompanied by vomiting. Crohn’s Disease is an inflammatory disease that attacks the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus, which is what makes it distinctive from other irritable bowel problems. Crohn’s presents a special challenge for young sufferers as it may stunt growth and cause a delay in the onset of puberty as well as a weakening of the bones. The illness may keep a young person from taking part in the normal young activities causing emotional and psychological issues of having to live daily with a chronic disorder.

Conventional wisdom from the traditional medical community preaches that there is no known cause of Crohn’s, however some researchers are successfully using diet as way to combat the illness. Some even claim success at finding a cure through diet, specifically a raw food diet of organic fruits and vegetables. Doctors do admit that certain foods can trigger the symptoms of Crohn’s and that by eliminating these various foods from the diet, a sufferer can control outbreaks.

Researchers think Crohn’s is initially triggered genetically in combination with environmental factors. They speculate that genetically susceptible persons undergo an abnormal immune response setting off the disease. In other words, something will trigger the immune system to turn on, however it won’t turn off, continuing to cause inflammation. Crohn’s Disease apparently runs in families with 15-20% of those diagnosed also have a family member who similarly suffers. To date, several genes have been linked to the disease, but there is apparently no clear pattern as to how these genes may interact to cause the disease.

Each episode of symptoms depends on where the inflammation occurs. About 70% of young people have an inflamed ileum. More than half of these young people also suffer inflammation in segments of their colon. About 10% of young people must deal with inflamed colons only, while another 10% must learn how to live with inflammation in various parts of the small bowel. Some children and young people have stomach inflammation, that part of the intestine where the stomach empties into the bowel.

A child with a chronic condition like Crohn’s affect the lifestyle and living arrangements of the whole family. Depending on the age of the child, all others in the household become care givers for the one, which can cause stress, as well as buildups of resentments and feelings that life must revolve around the one. If this begins to manifest then it is wise for the entire family to seek counseling for any of several support groups, readily available to help families through crisis of this kind.

                Living With Crohn’s

Crohn’s Disease, while serious, is rarely fatal. However, it is a chronic illness with many side effects and complications. There can be long periods of remission if the illness is managed correctly. Some doctors feel that the disease can be cured with the right diet and lifestyle changes. There are practical techniques to manage and control symptoms to drastically improve quality of life.

Once you’ve been told by a doctor that you do in fact have Crohn’s Disease, then begin learning all you can about the disease. Ask your doctor for specific support resources, and information on all aspects of the illness. Look to the internet to find support groups and the names of books on Crohn’s and its management and control. Find a website where you can go for the latest information on the newest and most up to date research on Crohn’s.

Some researchers stress that diet and lifestyle changes go a long way in controlling the illness. Choosing your diet carefully will go a long way in improving quality of life. Most experts recommend ridding your diet of trigger foods, those foods that bring on attacks, like dairy products, spicy foods, foods high in fat and even some high in fiber. Usually you will find out about these triggers after you eat them. If you are pained, take them out of your diet and reintroduce them later in smaller quantities. Some sufferers of Crohn’s move to a raw food diet of organic produce. Juicing their fruits and vegetables to ease digestion. Other concerns include malnutrition because with this type illness, the body becomes bad at absorbing the right amount of nutrients. Couple this with loss of appetite and there is potential for a real problem. Consult your doctor and have him or her refer you to a dietitian who can create a diet that will sustain you complete with foods, supplements and and vitamins.

Planning activities ahead will circumvent those unpredictable symptoms that make most people want to stay home. Symptoms such as diarrhea, gas and stomach pain tend to discourage social activities, mainly out of fear of embarrassment. But it is critical to make an effort to take part in activities that you enjoy in order to maintain a normal life. One way to do this is to choose destinations close to home and where you feel comfortably in control. Upon arrival make note of the all restroom locations as a way to relieve anxiety or stress should an outbreak occur. To alleviate worry, travel with extra toilet tissue and or undergarments.

Stress plays an important part in the onset of symptoms associated with Crohn’s Disease. Controlling stress and anxiety will go a long way in navigating flare-ups and symptoms. Some of the more popular ways to alleviate stress is to take a yoga course and learn to meditate along with deep breathing techniques. A regular exercise program will also aid normal bowel function. It is wise to consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program of any kind.

Finally, create a support system of friends, family, professional and medical help. Honest and open relationships with these people or groups will enable you to function more normally and to ensure you are receiving the best possible care.

IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease can be very painful diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. While rarely, if ever fatal the pain and discomfort will come and go over the course of a lifetime, usually triggered by food and stress and anxiety or all of the above. Today, some researchers postulate that all this life long suffering may not be necessary. They feel that a change in diet is the ticket to a life free of IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease related symptoms and side effects.
The medical community prescribes a regimen of drugs, minor life change and possibly surgery as a means of managing the illness. Patients diagnosed with IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease are told the best they can hope for is occasional remission from the disease until a cure is found. The damage done to the intestinal tract continues unabated masked over by the medications, which often come with side effects of their own. The patient, meantime, gets weaker and weaker.
A number of food experts believe that western or American eating habits are to blame for IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. This typical diet is loaded with processed foods, fats and sugar Researchers favor changing the diet altogether by going back to a simpler, unprocessed way of eating that is also free of extra sugar. The argument for changing the way westerners eat is a compelling argument given the epidemics of obesity, cancer, heart disease as well as other illnesses along with IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease.
IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease is in fact just one of a number of illnesses that chronically affect all or part of the gastrointestinal tract. These ailments begin to appear in other cultures when westernized eating and preparing food is introduced. People get fatter and start suffering and dying in similar fashion to Americans.
So what can you do? Experts recommend eliminating all meat, dairy, eggs and other processed foods from the daily diet. The optimum way to eat contend some, is to go to completely raw, organically produced food. Some experts maintain a raw food diet will not only control IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease, but will completely cure it.
This way of eating is not new, having been around for hundreds of years. It consists mainly of whole, raw or juiced fruits and organic vegetables with added portions of nuts, seeds and some fatty fruits. Those who are dealing with a chronic illness should first talk to a doctor before switching to a new eating regimen. If you wish to go it alone then start out with non acidic raw fruits like bananas. Simple fruits are the easiest to digest.

How To Manage Crohn’s Disease and Colitis

Although a cure has not been discovered for Crohn’s Disease and Colitis, patients can manage their condition. Sometimes doctors suggest surgery but it is often possible to control the unpleasant symptoms and side effects. Of course, individuals should always check with their doctor before making any drastic changes.

How To Manage Crohn’s Disease and Colitis

. Understand Your Condition

Nobody can improve their condition if they do not even understand it. Indeed, it can be quite alarming if you do not know the facts. Many people have the perception that Crohn’s Disease and Colitis are the same disease.

Although both conditions are related, there are distinct differences. Crohn’s disease (CD) may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract. Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is usually an inflammation of the large intestine (the colon).

Since there is no medical cure, some people think mistakenly that the conditions must be fatal diseases. In fact, Crohn’s Disease and Colitis sufferers live a normal life span (men, 78 years, women, 79 years). Get the facts from your doctor and other reputable sources (books, documentaries, online). A second doctor’s opinion can give a patient that extra peace of mind.

. Acknowledge The Symptoms And Side Effects

Individuals must try to manage the symptoms and side effects. Crohn’s Disease and Colitis is not a death sentence. A patient’s mission must be to discover safe and healthy methods that work for them. They need to find how to reduce or even eliminate any unpleasantness.

. Consider A Raw Food Diet

Individuals should never make any drastic changes to their diet without consulting their doctor. Yet many researchers insist that the Western diet is bad for Crohn’s Disease and Colitis sufferers. The Western diet is full of fats, processed foods, and sugars and researchers believe that a raw food diet using organic produce is a much better choice.

Once a person is given the ‘ok’ by their doctor, the patient can implement the diet slowly and allow the body time to adjust to its new fuel. Numerous studies and examples have shown that a raw food diet can eliminate all the uncomfortable symptoms. Of course, the improvement will be gradual and nobody should ever expect an ‘overnight’ cure.

. Get Informed About Water Fasts

Some sufferers have found that the combination of a water fast and daily raw food diet have eliminated their symptoms. Although nobody should embark on a Crohn’s/Colitis water fast without checking with a trained professional, this approach is an option. Many testimonials praise its effectiveness. Everyone is, however, in charge of their own health and, ultimately, must make their own decisions in these matters.

. Keep Up-To-Date

There is continuous research being done about Crohn’s Disease and Colitis. Individuals affected by those conditions should keep up to date on all the latest developments in the field. One recent study explores the effectiveness of Vitamin A in the treatment of Crohn’s Disease and Colitis.

How Do You Know it’s IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease

IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease is a hard conditions to effectively diagnose because the symptoms are many and varied. This chronic illness affects the whole gastrointestinal tract with symptoms depending upon what part of the GI tract is inflamed at any particular time. Several bouts and attacks with certain symptoms will eventually result in IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease diagnosis.

Common symptoms of IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease are persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramps and pain shortly after eating, fever and constant fatigue, weight loss and night sweats Other symptoms include rectal bleeding, and loss of appetite. Sometimes there is pain in the joints, eyes and skin. IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease can also lead to severe complications like an obstructed intestine, usually caused by swelling, ulcers and the formation of scar tissue. Another possible complication is the onset of malnutrition caused by the body’s inability to get the right nutrition to sustain itself on what food is being ingested. In addition, fissures, which are small tears or cuts may appear in the anal canal, along with pus filled abscesses or fistulas.

Doctors and researchers are not sure what causes IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. What is known is that it is chronic, meaning it is ongoing and incurable, and it is an inflammatory disease of the digestive tract that may come from the interaction of genetics, the environment and the immune system. Still other researchers blame the Western or American diet. Whatever the cause, many researchers think the problem lies buried in the immune system, which activates, but fails to turn itself off when done working. This failure to “turn off” causes the inflammation that damages the intestines resulting in the IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease diagnosis.

IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease can begin at any age, however, it strikes most people between the ages of 15 and 35, and most sufferers are white women of European descent. About 20% of all sufferers also have a sibling, parent or child who also suffers some form of GI tract irritation. It is believed that nearly half a million Americans suffer from Crohn’s Disease alone while the IBS numbers are in the millions. But the numbers could be greater because the symptoms are so similar to a number of other illnesses. So much so, that visiting a doctor is only the first step in what may turn out to be a very long process of recuperation and understanding.

When Crohn’s is suspected, your doctor will order a battery of tests to eliminate all other possibilities, such as irritable bowel syndrome, which causes frequent but painless bowel movements without the involvement of inflammation. Celiac Disease is an allergic reaction to gluten, which damages the small intestine, brought on by eating wheat, barley and oats. Crohn’s can also be misdiagnosed as ulcerative colitis and diverticular disease. Further tests can clear up the confusion between the illnesses.

Some researchers and doctors feel that IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease is curable with the right lifestyle changes and diet, and no medication necessary. None of the approaches taken to combat these disease’s are quick and easy. The sufferer must decide if they’re willing to live with the illness or do what is necessary to defeat it altogether, and act according with food and lifestyle changes.

                Daily Management of Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s Disease is a chronic illness that is rarely if ever fatal. The side effects of the illness and resulting complications can be deadly if left untreated. Crohn’s sufferers go through long periods of remission with infrequent flare ups if the illness is properly managed. Many doctors think the Crohn’s can actually be cured with the correct diet and right lifestyle changes. Approaching those changes practically with a little prior planning will go a long way in controlling the illness while improving quality of life.

After your illness is diagnosed, then it is time to begin learning all that you can about how to manage your condition. Your physician is the perfect source for specific information concerning support resource groups as well as information about the illness itself. In addition the internet makes it a snap to fin local support groups in your town as well as a host of library resources for learning about Crohn’s management and control.

The exact cause of Crohn’s is still not known, and most in the medical community resort to conventional measures for dealing with the chronic disease. These include relying on minor lifestyle changes such as eliminating certain foods from your diet and prescribed medications for the various symptoms of the condition. Food triggers include dairy products, spicy foods, as well as foods high in fat and sometimes even high in fiber. Crohn’s sufferers can identify these triggers because they cause discomfort and pain shortly after consumption.

If you do feel pain after eating, take that food out of your diet. You can reintroduce it later in smaller quantities. Some sufferers of Crohn’s Disease turn to a raw food diet of organic produce. Juicing their fruits and vegetables to encourage faster and easier digestion. Other concerns are malnutrition because with this type illness, the body loses its ability to absorb the right amount of nutrients. Couple this with loss of appetite and you have a real problem that could lead to malnutrition. Ask your doctor to refer you to a dietitian who can create a diet that will sustain you complete with foods, supplements and and vitamins.

Planning your social activities ahead of time will control those unpredictable symptoms that make most people want to stay home in the first place. Side effects such as diarrhea, gas and stomach pain tend to discourage social activities, mainly out of fear of embarrassment. But it is important to make an effort to take part in activities that you enjoy if only to maintain a normal life. One way to do this is to choose destinations close to home and where you feel comfortably in control. Upon arrival make note of the all restroom locations as a way to relieve anxiety or stress should an outbreak occur. To lessen worry, travel with extra toilet tissue and or undergarments.

Stress plays a big role in the outbreak of symptoms associated with Crohn’s Disease. Controlling stress and anxiety goes a long way in handling flare-ups. Some of the more popular ways to alleviate stress is to take a yoga class or a tai chi course while learning how to meditate along with working deep breathing techniques. A regular exercise program helps normal bowel function. It is wise to consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program of any kind.

Finally, build a support system of friends, family, and medical care providers. Honest and open relationships with these people or groups will enable you to function normally ensuring that you receiving the best care and support.

Can Diet Change Alone Cure Crohn’s Disease

The chronic infection known as Crohn’s Disease is a very painful disease of the gastrointestinal tract. While not fatal the pain and discomfort can come and go over the course of a lifetime. Some doctors and researchers have come to the conclusion that all this life long suffering may not be necessary. They feel that a change in diet is the ticket to a life free of Crohn’s related symptoms and side effects.
Conventional wisdom in the medical community follows a regimen of drugs, minor life change and possibly surgery as a means of managing the illness. Patients diagnosed with Crohn’s are told the best they can hope for is occasional remission from the disease until a cure is found. The damage done to the intestinal tract continues unabated masked over by the medications, which often come with insidious side effects of their own. The patient, meantime, gets weaker and weaker.
Many researchers believe the culprit behind Crohn’s and many other chronic ailments is the Western or American diet which is loaded with processed foods, fats and sugar. These researchers favor changing the diet altogether by going back to a simpler, unprocessed way of eating that is also free from excess sugar. The argument for changing diet is a sound one given the epidemics of obesity, cancer, heart disease as well as other illnesses along with Crohn’s Disease. Crohn’s is in fact just one of a number of illnesses that chronically affect all or part of the gastrointestinal tract. These ailments begin to appear in other cultures when Americanized eating and preparing food is introduced. People get fatter and start suffering and dying in similar fashion to Americans.
Scientists and researchers recommend removing all meat, dairy, eggs and other processed foods. Some mandate switching to a raw food diet of only organically grown produce to circumvent the heavy use of pesticides and other chemicals that coat typical American produce. Raw food proponents maintain that a raw food diet will cure Crohn’s Disease completely.
On the other hand, vegetables may prove difficult in the very beginning for your system to handle. Eating vegetables right away may even exacerbate your situation worsening your symptoms for a while. Go slow adding foods gradually will allow your system to adapt more easily. Spread the conversion over a months time for best effects. Just be consistent. It is not uncommon to feel worse before you feel better. Know that healing is happening and better health is right around the corner.

How Do You Know You Have Crohn’s Disease

The symptoms and potential complications resulting from Crohn’s Disease are many and varied. Crohn’s affects the entire gastrointestinal tract with symptoms depending upon what part of the GI tract is inflamed at any particular point in time, with certain symptoms common to nearly all sufferers resulting in the eventual Crohn’s diagnosis.

These common symptoms are persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramps and pain shortly after eating, fever and constant fatigue, weight loss and night sweats Other symptoms include rectal bleeding, and loss of appetite. Sometimes pain may be felt in the joints, eyes and skin. Crohn’s may also lead to severe complications like an obstructed intestine, usually caused by swelling, ulcers and the formation of scar tissue. Another potential complication is the onset of malnutrition caused by the body’s inability to obtain the right nutrition to sustain itself on what food is being ingested. In addition, fissures, which are small tears or cuts may appear in the anal canal, along with pus filled abscesses or fistulas.

Despite all of these symptoms and complications, regular medical doctors and researchers are still not sure what causes Crohn’s Disease. What is known is that it is chronic, meaning it is ongoing and theoretically incurable, and it is an inflammatory disease of the digestive tract that may come from the interaction of genetics, the environment as well as the immune system. Still other researchers attribute the cause to the Western or American diet. Whatever the cause, many researchers think the problem lies with a sufferer’s immune system, in that once the immune system activates, it doesn’t know how to turn itself back off. This failure to “turn off” causes the inflammation that damages the intestines resulting in the Crohn’s diagnosis.

Crohn’s can occur at any age, however, it strikes most people between the ages of 15 and 35, with most sufferers being white women of European descent. About 20% of all sufferers also have a sibling, parent or child who also suffers some form of GI tract irritation. It is believed that nearly half a million Americans suffer from Crohn’s Disease. The number could be greater because the symptoms are so similar to a number of other illnesses. So much so, that visiting a doctor is only the first step in what may turn out to be a very long process of recuperation and understanding.

There is no single test to diagnose Crohn’s so your doctor will order a battery of tests to eliminate all other possibilities, such as irritable bowel syndrome, which causes frequent but painless bowel movements without the involvement of inflammation. Celiac Disease is an allergic reaction to gluten, which damages the small intestine, brought on by eating wheat, barley and oats. Crohn’s can also be misdiagnosed as ulcerative colitis and diverticular disease. Further tests can clear up the confusion between the illnesses.

In addition to tests, doctors utilize an array of technique to diagnose Crohn’s including X-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds, MRIs, and barium enemas. The testing and diagnosis procedures can be long involved and expensive. Once determined most doctors will treat Crohn’s with medication, adhering to the general thinking that Crohn’s is not curable and sufferers must learn to live with it for the rest of their lives. Other researchers and doctors feel that Crohn’s is curable with the right lifestyle changes and diet, no medication necessary. None of the approaches taken to combat the disease are quick and easy. The sufferer must decide if they’re willing to live with the illness or do what is necessary to defeat it altogether.
