Crohn’s Disease is a painful and chronic infection of the gastrointestinal tract, that plagues those unfortunate enough to contract it for years and years. Today, however, some doctors and researchers feel this on-going suffering is totally unnecessary, requiring only a change in diet to eliminate most of the symptoms.
Most doctors follow the common approach of using drugs and or surgery to combat the disease, with most telling their patients that Crohn’s is not curable. Sufferers are told that the best they can hope for is an occasional remission or temporary cessation of the symptoms. During these common treatments the damage done to the intestinal tract by the disease continues unabated with the sufferer getting weaker and weaker.
Other doctors and researchers have started to look at the Western diet as the main culprit behind Crohn’s. Many doctors feel the foods consumed in the Western world or what is commonly called the American diet are just not healthy, causing more harm than good. This argument is backed up by the overwhelming numbers of people suffering life threatening illnesses such as obesity, cancer, heart disease, as well as Crohn’s Disease. To be sure, these illnesses do occur in other parts of the world, but not nearly in the numbers seen in America. It is only when American foods are introduced into a culture previously free of these problems, do you begin to see an increase in chronic illness mirroring the statistics recorded in America.
Scientists recommend immediate changes in lifestyle and diet in order to halt and then cure the damage done to the GI tract. These changes include removing all meat, dairy, eggs and other processed foods from the sufferer’s diet. Some researchers recommend moving to a raw food diet altogether, in order to remove any possibility of irritation to the body.
Proponents contend that a raw food diet will cure Crohn’s Disease completely. This way of eating is not new, having been around for hundreds of years. This diet consists of whole, raw fruits and vegetables, along with small portions of certain nuts, seeds and some fatty fruits. While it is not recommended, sufferers can proceed without doctor supervision by starting out simply, with non acidic raw fruits such as bananas, eating them as often as you feel hungry. Stick with simple fruits in the beginning because they are easiest to digest.
Vegetables, on the other hand, are difficult for the digestive system to handle, especially when it is already damaged. Early on, in fact, vegetables may bring back previous symptoms. Completely eliminate all cooked or processed foods from your regimen. Sufferers should begin to see and to feel changes in their system within one month. However it will take due diligence on this diet change for at least a year, before the symptoms abate completely. It is not uncommon to feel worse before you feel better. This is common while the body detoxes and corrects itself. Have patience that your body is healing itself and the cure is just around the corner.

Is Your Doctor the Right One to Treat Your Crohn’s, Colitis or IBS

Once you’ve begun to experience the symptoms related to Crohn’s Disease, you will need to see a doctor and have your questions answered about what it is you’re going through. Maybe you’ve already been diagnosed but don’t really trust the physician who is treating you. Maybe his or her communication skills leave a lot to be desired. Open and honest communication is the key to controlling and beating this illness, so it may be time to find a health care provider willing to go the whole nine yards with you to see you happy and back in control. There are things you can do to get to a comfortable place to start dealing with this disease. But knowledge and research are the key.

So you’re looking for another doctor, well, a week prior to the appointment, make a list of all symptoms, regardless of how minor. It you have bloating or constipation or diarrhea, put it on your list. If you’re suffering stomach pain, write it down, as well as the foods you ate before the pain came. Write down the frequency of your bowel movements since Crohn’s Colitis and IBS has to do with gastrointestinal tract function. Make note of any change in normal bathroom habits. List all foods that you eat and connect them to any flare ups that you may have suffered. The more detailed you can be, the better the doctor can help you.

The day of the appointment take along a notebook so that you can make a written record of the conversation to give you something to refer to later on.

Ask your doctor some of these questions::

1- Do I really have Crohn’s Colitis or IBS Disease or is it be some other condition? This is where your list of symptoms comes into play.

2- Find out which tests doctors use to diagnose the Disease? Diagnosis usually comes following a battery of tests and X-rays.

3-What is the specific treatment for and can the illness be cured? If your doctor is traditional, then lifestyle changes and medication will be prescribed. Surgery may come into the conversation in an extreme case. Or your doctor may subscribe to the new school of thought about using diet changes to fight the symptoms and flare ups.

4-Talk about conventional treatment options, and which ones will fit your normal lifestyle.

5-Ask about the effects of food, medications and potential side effects of each on your system.

6-Go over the causes of flare ups as well as the list of foods that you normally consume. Certain foods are known to trigger attacks and the doctor should be aware and make you aware if you’re eating them.

7-Determine if there is a need to curb your social and exercise activities. Talk to your doctor about the kinds of exercise you regularly take part in.

8- Determine the openness of your Doctor to other treatments that he or she may not of heard of. If the topic of diet, fruits and vegetables are dismissed this may not be someone with an open enough mind to see you through to results that you are looking for.

These are only suggestions for some of the questions that you need to ask. You will probably come up with many more questions on your own, depending on what you’ve already experienced. While the physician is answering the questions, ask yourself how comfortable you feel talking to this person. Are you on edge, feel you just want to escape? Or are you comfortable? Are you getting enough information? Or do they seem impatient ? Remember, again, it’s your life and your body, so take all the time you need to find a doctor who pleases you. Someone who will work for you to help you accomplish your health goals this may include things that they may not have heard like healing through diet but there shouldn’t be any Doctor you would choose who would fear eating fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy and healing way of life.

Juice Fasting to Combat Crohn’s Disease

Most conventional doctors who treat Crohn’s Disease use harsh medications with dangerous side effects while advising their patients to stay away from certain foods. This type of treatment and advice allows the patient to exist alongside the illness, but not allow them to live the best possible life. Conventional medicine says there is no cure for Crohn’s Disease. However some researchers and scientists disagree. These mavericks believe that lifestyle and diet changes can cure all chronic illnesses. Juicing fresh fruits and vegetables is just one of the newer approaches being taken to fight this debilitating illness.

Experts estimate that as many as 50 million Americans suffer from some type of irritable bowl syndrome including colitis and Crohn’s Disease. Most of the irritation is caused by simple food intolerance according to these same experts. This thinking is backed up by evidence that symptoms generally disappear once the trigger foods are taken out of the patient’s diet. The problem remains because even so called healthy foods like sweet potato or broccoli or blue berries can be trigger foods for some people. Processed foods are proven bad for you in excess. For people suffering from Crohn’s they present major problems such as gas, bloating, diarrhea and stomach pain.

Early on, in order to get some relief, it is smart to identify the trigger foods that cause the inflammation. Foods like whole wheat bread, milk, dairy products, eggs, peanuts or even apples and corn can trigger an attack. The point is to specifically target the one food causing the problem. Most doctors test for allergies before diagnosing Crohn’s.

Juicing has become very popular when managing Crohn’s Disease. It is very simple to do. Fresh fruits and sometimes vegetables are reduced down to juice, the pulp is separated out and the juice consumed. This eases digestion and promotes healing along the gastrointestinal tract. Some mix the pulp back into the juice after extraction, however this is not necessarily a good idea since the pulp is fiber which can irritate a damaged lining. Juicing enables the body to use its own system for healing and repairing itself. The detoxification, however, may cause headaches, weakening and dizziness for a few days or until the body readjusts itself. The patient may also suffer some joint pain as the body corrects. These minor problems will fade away in a short time.

Another symptom that your body is throwing off toxins is fatigue. So relaxing and resting is good while juicing for health and healing. This tiredness may last as long as two weeks depending on the amount of toxicity in the body. So put aside all extra activity and exercise until you get through this initial phase of detoxification.

Begin by juicing fresh fruits like apples, oranges or watermelon. Once you’ve gotten the hang of it, toss in some of your favorite vegetables. Start by adding a carrot or two or even a celery stalk to a juice made of apples and oranges. Adjust your tastes to fit what you prefer and you’re on your way to better health.

Learn how water/juice fasts can benefit the body.

Crohn’s Disease and Colitis: Water and Juice Fasts

Some researchers believe that water fasts can eliminate the unpleasant symptoms of Crohn’s Disease and Colitis. Indeed, some sufferers will confirm that the fast worked for them. They followed up the fast with a daily raw food diet using organic produce. Of course, nobody should begin a water or juice fast or raw food diet without consulting their doctor.

Water and juice fasts are thought to rid the body of impurities. The fasts are a form of detoxification. During this period, the body will concentrate mostly on getting rid of impurities rather than using energy for digestion. Detoxing allows the body to purge itself of substances that are detrimental to our health.

Body impurities cause bacteria, parasites, and mucus – all three lead to illness. During fasting, the body’s major organs rally to its defense. The lungs, kidneys, liver, colon, and skin destroy toxins, replace damaged cells, and build new ones.

The body heals itself but many people do not realize that our bodies possess that power. Yet with a little help from us, our bodies can go successfully though detoxification. Some believe that detoxification can slow down or reverse the aging process and even reverse diseased tissue caused by Crohn’s Disease and Colitis.

Crohn’s/Colitis water fasts can take impurities from the blood, clean the large intestine, and build up the endocrine system. Yet the fasting process is not easy and is not for everyone. Sometimes people have multiple conditions and fasting would not be wise in their situation.

Even if individuals have no pre-existing conditions, fasting is hard on the body. The process is a shock and a drastic change to one’s system. Indeed, water/juice fasting comes with its own set of side effects – headache, dizziness, coated tongue, metallic taste in the mouth, joint pain, sinus discharges, diarrhea, and dark and bad-smelling urine. Keep in mind that the body is in a state of detoxification.

Actually, severe fasts (and water/juice fasts fall into this category) should be monitored by medical professionals – either at a clinic or as an outpatient under strict supervision. The side effects will dissipate with time and the unpleasant symptoms of Crohn’s Disease and Colitis should also disappear in due course.

Many experts think that people should begin with short fasts (one-day fast per week or even per month) and build slowly and gradually to longer fasting periods (from two-day fasts to seven-day fasts). A weeklong fast is an intense experience. Experts recommend that nobody should try this fast more than four times a year. Some Crohn’s Disease and Colitis sufferers partake of one fast during each season.

Detoxification is a difficult process. It should not be entered into without consultation with doctors as well as adequate supervision. Some sufferers attest to the positive results of water fasting. They claim that their symptoms disappeared after trying the fast and following up with a raw food diet. Yet nobody should take such drastic steps without researching the topic, seeking professional advice, and making an informed decision.

Healing Crohn’s and Crohn’s Disease the Natural Way

Crohn’s disease is chronic, meaning that it never goes away or is cured. It is an inflammatory ailment that affects the entire gastrointestinal tract causing serious health complications. This illness dramatically affects quality of life for sufferers. It is not, however life threatening. Those with Crohn’s can expect to life a full lifetime with recurrent remissions. Men with the disease have a normal life expectancy of about 78 years while women may live a while longer on average. Morbidity attributed to Crohn’s is usually caused by untreated side effects and complication.

Symptoms vary from patient to patient and consequently there is no specific treatment. All treatment is crafted to fit the individual. Some common symptoms do include, anorexia, stomach pain, diarrhea, fever gas, bloating and dramatic weight loss. Sometimes there is blood and pus in the stool resulting from the damage done to the mucus lining of the bowels and intestines. Crohn’s is often complicated by malnutrition or the body’s inability to absorb the nutrients it needs to repair itself. In addition the immune system is compromised by the on going damage. Undigested food can accumulate and cause dangerous blockages in the intestines. Lesions and tears in the linings can sometimes cause spillage and damage to surrounding organs and force the need for surgical repairs.
No one has yet been able to pinpoint the exact cause of Crohn’s but there are a number of factors that contribute to its presence. These include poor diet and nutrition, food allergies, a compromised immune system as well as other environmental factors. Stress and anxiety are contribute to the discomfort felt by most sufferers.
Some researchers speculate that ridding the diet of processed foods, refined carbohydrates and fats along with the chemical additives and pesticides that go into food these days will go a long way in affecting a cure for Crohn’s. These same researchers blame the American way of eating as the main culprit behind all chronic illness existing in the world.
Other researchers and scientists are taking a closer look at the link between food allergies and symptoms of Crohn’s. All doctors routinely test for food sensitivities and allergies in connection to eliminate them as the cause of the problems. Common allergy foods are milk and dairy products, wheat, gluten, corn and chocolate to name just a few.
Many researchers feel that by restoring the natural biochemical balance in the body is the way to naturally cure Crohn’s. Naturally healing Crohn’s begins with removing all food triggers and harmful processed products as well as the pesticides and chemicals with which they are grown. Doing this while adding a natural and diet will see a return of strength and energy enabling you to add an exercise regimen to go another step toward better health without drugs and medications.
